Background and Structure::
...........................................................................................................................................................................
This extended course consists of the following:
• The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: key knowledge and skills module.
• Any three of the following modules (if you are a manager planning training for your team,
everyone on the course does the same three
modules, so they will normally be chosen
by you):
- CBT with Depression
- CBT with Stress and Worry
- CBT with Panic
- CBT with OCD
- CBT with Anger and Irritability
- CBT with Substance Misuse
• Four written work-based projects (each approximately 2,000 words) corresponding to the
four modules studied (The CBT Key Knowledge and Skills module plus the three chosen
modules, above). These are written projects designed to show that you can apply the
theoretical knowledge gained from the course to the clinical situation. You email each project
to APT, and it is read and marked by an examiner who gives you feedback.
• Your final mark for the course is made up of your marks on the modules plus your marks on
the projects. There are two grades of pass, namely 'Pass' and 'Distinction'.
The Projects:
...........................................................................................................................................................................
Project One: assessment and case conceptualisation.
• The assessment. This will contain all the information you have gathered, whether by
interview or by examining the pre-existing notes on the person.
• The case conceptualisation. This should include a clear account of (a) how the problems
evolved, (b) what is maintaining the problems and (c) what CBT elements you believe will
be relevant in overcoming the problems.
Project Two, Three and Four: an account of CBT applied to each of your chosen specialist areas.
Projects 2-4 each follow the same format, namely to write up the assessment and treatment of a patient who has the problem in question (depression, or worry, or substance misuse, etc). A good piece of work will contain the following:
• A full account of the assessment interview.
• Your conceptualisation of the problem.
• Your goals.
• Your plan for achieving the goals.
• How you measure your progress in achieving the stated goals.
• A clear account of treatment sessions.
• An overall summary of how the treatment progressed.
• Reference to any relevant literature.
The Quiz:
...........................................................................................................................................................................
The quizzes correspond to each of the four modules you have studied. The quizzes are designed to be a thorough test of the knowledge elements of each of the modules and therefore - in assessment terms - intended to complement the projects, which test your ability to apply that knowledge.
Marking:
...........................................................................................................................................................................
Exams and projects count equally. To pass the course you need to pass every exam and every project. The pass mark is 40%. To obtain a distinction on the course you need to obtain an average mark of 70% across all marked elements.
